3D Simulation of Battery Fire on a Large Steel Frame Structure due to Depleted Battery Piles

Lithium ion batteries (LIB) can rupture and result in thermal runaway battery fires. In the process of transporting lithium using trains, massive collection cause train fire pose significant danger to public. This is especially critical when occurs amid a heavily populated metropolitan environment. paper reports 3D analysis warehouse with possible due LIB propagation at rail yard. Six cases close vicinity were considered. The six are worst-case scenarios Monte Carlo simulation different that may occur an actual steel storage facility Capital Railyard, Raleigh, North Carolina. A finite element (FE) frame model was constructed for most simulated. results indicated several structural components would experience large stresses deflections during simulated fires resulting instability structure. Specifically, members roof represent elements deformations as early 4 minutes after starts. Furthermore, effective utilization protection delay somewhat effects extend time failure 45 one cases, prevent instability. Thus, from waste transport very realistic problem runaway, performed current study be used preventive investigation technique buildings exposed risk.
